Let's Nuke Mars!
There is a fast way to heat the atmosphere of Mars and it was introduced by Elon Musk. The plan is to nuke both poles and allow for the heat to spread through the atmosphere. After that, wait for the radiation to be expunged and then begin the process of creating a civilization. It is incredibly simple and sounds very effective, too. The problem is that in order to have substantial effectiveness, we have to use a more powerful nuke. However, the more powerful the nuke is, the longer you have to wait for the radiation to disappear. I think the solution to this problem is that a nuke which either emits less radiation or no radiation needs to be developed if it is possible.
Regardless of whether it is possible or not, there also needs to be an urgency to get us to Mars. As Neil DeGrasse Tyson says, some kind of urgency needs to be in place for a government to take our ambitions seriously. An example of this is how quickly America went to the moon during the Cold War. While global warming is an urgency, there is a predicament about whether we should try to put all our efforts into reversing the effects of global warming or putting it all towards starting a civilization on Mars. The decision needs to be made quickly. Personally, I think we can go to Mars, but at the same time, switch to renewable energy. Not only is renewable energy better for the environment, it is much cheaper and has an unlimited supply. I also think that even if we are able to reverse the effects of climate change, going to Mars should still be one of our endeavours. The urgency must be something political. The question is if disturbing peace or something along those lines is worth going to Mars.
There are many obstacles to surpass when considering conquering Mars, but one of the most ignored and understated ones is transporting billions of people to Mars. There are so many questions, which we should try to answer before there is no time. Who goes to Mars first? How will we get there? Who is going to pay for all this? Will each country individually send their own people to Mars or will it be a joint effort? It is true that taking the time to consider these is very tedious, but it is absolutely necessary.
There is still one more impediment in front of nuking Mars. When another planet is visited, measures are taken to ensure that nothing on the planet is infected by Earth bacteria, or that no foreign infection of any type is brought back to Earth that could cause an epidemic. After the moon landing, the astronauts who embarked on the journey were quarantined to ensure that they were not infected by anything. There are many efforts to preserve both the foreign planet and Earth. So, if so many measures are being taken, nuking Mars seems extremely far-fetched. If there is any possibility of life on Mars at all, the nukes would likely be wiped. That is if nuclear power or radiation has any effect on them. Such a sudden increase in heat would require extremely fast adaptation to something that has never happened before to the life on Mars.
Nuking Mars is not a matter of whether it can work or not. Even if doesn't work, the only consequence on Earth will be that money was wasted. The matter is much more complicated and controversial than that. There will be many different aspects of this. The ones I mentioned are only the foundation of it all. Topics of religion or economics could potentially be involved. I want civilization on Mars to be a reality. I want humans to be an interplanetary species and so do many other aspirant people. But not everyone. And most people are so indulged in the issues here on Earth that it has not even been considered yet, which is understandable. Regardless, we will probably have to go to Mars at some point, in this epoch or another.
